Links to Christian Thinking in Artificial Intelligence (AI)
This page collects together lists pages, articles and videos that look at AI mainly from a Christian or other religious perspective, some from a Dooyeweerdian one.
Material on AI from a Christian Perspective
The following are other material, not all from a Dooyeweerdian perspective.
AI from Dooyeweerdian Perspective
- Some Wisdom About Artificial Intelligence (AI). This gives something of experience with AI during the first wave in the 1980s, and the lessons we learned then and should be applying today. During the 1980s, development involved skilled and sensitive human knowledge elicitation from experts (KEAI); today this is bypassed by machine learning (MLAI) - and yet we are discovering that MLAI cannot escape the need for human elicitation. Three versions:
- Three blogs on AI published by Thinkfaith.net that make use of Dooyeweerd's philosophy:
- On Hannah Fry's AI Confidential TV programmes on AI Trascripts, summaries and comments on how Dooyeweerd can provide deeper and more robust understanding
- Dooyeweerd's Philosophy - and its relevance to AI - material delivered at lecture / seminar at the University of Salford on 12 March 2026, in a AI in Business to help students learn about Dooyeweerd so they can undertake aspectual analysis.
- On Representing Knowledge in an AI System - looks especially at (a) in which aspects might AI succeed or fail? (b) how to train an AI system, (c) what we might learn from 1980-90s 'knowledge elicitation' AI.
- Artificial Intelligence with Dooyeweerd - video, 10 minutes. Especially on whether AI can be human. Part of talk given at the Toronto Institute for Christian studies, 2013.
- An Integrated Understanding of AI (pdf, 11 January 2024)
- Artificial Intelligence: An Holistic Perspective: a fresh approach to AI made possible using Dooyeweerd's philosophy.
- Aspect-Oriented AI Question-Answering: a proposal to develop better AI conversation systems
- Basden A, (1983). On the application of Expert Systems. Int. J. Man-Machine Studies, 19:461-477. An early paper that draws on actual experience of AI used in practice during the 1980s about what roles AI could play beyond just replacing humans. Still relevant today. Here is the Pdf.
- Working Sheet for Aspectual Analysis - print off list of aspects with space to fill things in.
